Advancements in Ultrasound Technology

Although ultrasound has been around for many years, there has often been problems with obtaining high resolution imagery. However, in recent times there have been advances made that make high resolution more achievable. It is done by using a holey structures metamaterial composed of copper tubing and works on the principle of deep-subwavelength imaging. By using this technology, the testing done can be more accurate, and treatments more specific.

It should be noted that in the world of ultrasound technology, the main challenge has been to create and wirelessly transmit high quality images using a reasonably sized transducer, without sacrificing the quality of the image. Thanks to new technology, recent advances have made ultrasound imaging easier and better. So much so, that as of earlier in the year, researchers at the University of Nottingham have been able to use a nanoscale ultrasound technique to see inside living cells without corrupting the biology of the cell.

This single advancement can change much of what we know about cancer and stem cell transplants. And unlike optical super resolution imaging, which requires the use of fluorescent dyes, and a significant amount of time, the nanoscale technique is more efficient. This new procedure will not cause any damage to the cells nor does it require any toxic chemicals to be effective. Consequently, the doctor is able to see within the cell, making the them better equipped to determine a course of action – such as using stem cell transplants.

Another advancement in the world of high resolution ultrasound, is that of wireless technology. Wireless technology can be used with all types of displays, making it even more versatile than ever. Making it even better for the medical office is that the wireless capability makes it practical for surgical techniques such as biceps tenodesis, anterolateral ligament reconstruction, medial patellofemoral ligament repair or reconstruction, and medial collateral ligament internal bracing.

In a daily setting, the wireless ultrasound device can be carried in a pocket and connected to a smart phone or tablet. Imagine being able to check a player for injuries after a sports field incident, without ever needing to leave the field. Within moments of a tumble, a high-resolution image can be seen and an assessment can be made to the extent of an injury.

Ultrasound technology is a must have for any medical facility. But as time and study goes on, it is clear that high resolution ultrasound imaging will not be limited to the office.
